Our Featured Speaker was R. David Lankes, Associate Professor, School of Information Studies, Syracuse University.
R. David Lankes is director of the Information Institute of Syracuse, and an associate professor in Syracuse
University's School of Information Studies. Lankes has always been interested in combining theory and practice
to create active research projects that make a difference. Past projects include the ERIC Clearinghouse on
Information and Technology, the Gateway to Education Materials, AskERIC and the Virtual Reference Desk.
Lankes' more recent work involves how participatory concepts can reshape libraries and credibility. This work
expands his ongoing work to understand the integration of human expertise in information systems.
Lankes is a passionate advocate for libraries and their essential role in today's society. He also seeks to understand
how information approaches and technologies can be used to transform industries. In this capacity he
has served on advisory boards and study teams in the fields of libraries, telecommunications, education, and
transportation including at the National Academies. He has been appointed as a visiting fellow at the National
library of Canada, the Harvard School of Education and the first fellow of ALA's Office for Information
Technology Policy.
Our featured speaker was Mary Ochs, Head of Information
Services and Collections at A.R. Mann Library, Cornell University
Libraries. Her talk was entitled, Librarians and Access to
Scientific Information in the Developing World.
Mary Ochs coordinates Mann Library’s international
programs for delivering agricultural literature to the developing
world, including TEEAL (The
Essential Electronic Agricultural Library) and Mann’s partnership
with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN on AGORA
(Access to Global Online Literature in Agriculture). Mary has
worked in the Cornell University library system for over 20 years.
She has an M.L.S. from Syracuse University and a B.S. from Cornell
University, College of Agriculture and Life.

and Initiation of New Members
was held on May 12, 2007 at the Syracuse University Goldstein
Alumni and Faculty Center, 401 University Place. Tours of
the iSchool
(formerly known as IST) at Hinds Hall were given following the
program.
Our Featured Speaker was Scott
Nicholson, Assistant Professor, School of Information Studies,
Syracuse University
Dr. Scott Nicholson is the new program director
for the MSLIS program at Syracuse University's School of Information
Studies and is a research scientist for the Information Institute
of Syracuse. His current research areas include the intersection
of gaming and libraries, participatory librarianship, and the
evidencebased measurement and evaluation of library services.
He will speak about involving users in the conversation through
participatory librarianship
